In the early 2000s, Dr. Kandakai began learning of local and nationally recognized incidences of children, particularly girls, who had been sexually victimized with hidden cameras planted in school locker rooms, gymnastics facilities and community centers. Fast forward 20 years, and research is suggesting that the incidence of technology facilitated sexual crime against children has grown exponentially.
Dr. Kandakai formulated The Center to bring awareness of the harms of technology facilitated sexual violence, specifically, intimate video voyeurism and to help build the capacity of public and private institutions, caregivers, and youth to identify and reduce their environmental risks.
Shaded Lilies: Center for the Prevention of Intimate Voyeurism represents a major advancement in promoting awareness and prevention of intimate video voyeurism, an issue that disproportionately affects children and women. The Center works to garner effective approaches to technology facilitated sexual violence such as intimate video voyeurism, by providing educational institutions, social service agencies, parents, and students with access to education, resources, and strategic supports.
In fostering diversity, the Center will ensure a governing board whose values align with child safety, gender, and racial equity and thus, will not discriminate in assigning Board membership or organizational staff based upon race, gender, ethnicity, nationality, religion, sexual identity, familial status, age, disability, and socio-economic status. The Center values and encourages the inclusive participation of organizational staff and will create an environment that supports equitable processes and opportunities for growth and development, regardless of the historical and structural practices of gender, racial, and socio-economic inequities.
